Catholic Association for Racial Justice

Friends

This is to inform you that the date and venue of the next meeting of the Urban Network has been changed.  The meeting will now take place on Friday 19 March (12:00 – 5:00) in Oxford (not on 23 Feb as previously announced).

This change is to allow our meeting to coincide with the International Conference – Renewing the Catholic Social Conscience – which will take place at Blackfriars in Oxford on that weekend.

I will be back in touch in a few weeks with an Agenda and specifics about the venue of our Urban Network meeting.

 All the best

 Richard

spacer The Changing Face of Britain Programme

During 2009, to mark its 25th Anniversary, CARJ is organising a Programme of local events in every diocese in England and Wales. These will then be followed by a national celebration at Westminster Cathedral on 7 November 2009. The Programme will explore the theme:

The Changing Face of Britain

The Programme has two aims, relating to the theme. It will:
  • celebrate the ways in which the Church and the wider society have changed for the better over those 25 years
  • attempt to read ‘the signs of the times’ and discern in our the new situation the challenges that we are called to address in the future.

The Programme will also include a 25th Anniversary Special Appeal for funds so we can support new racial justice projects in the future. The Programme was launched at the celebration of the feast of St Martin de Porres on 1 November 2008.

Young CARJ
spacer
spacer CARJ is committed to supporting black and minority ethnic young people and enabling them to have high aspirations, to achieve their full potential and to make a contribution to society and to the wider world. The CARJ Schools Project and the Young People’s Forum for World Citizenship support black and minority ethnic young people in the late years of primary school and through secondary school. They support, not only those at risk but also those who have the ability to become high achievers and leaders for the next generation. A Report of the Schools Project and Young People’s Forum (2007-08) is available from CARJ.

The CARJ Schools Project was established early in 2006. Since that time CARJ has worked intensively with small groups of pupils in selected primary schools. The Young People’s Forum for World Citizenship is being developed as a meeting place for young people, of different ages and backgrounds. Both the Schools Project and the Young Peopls’s Forum aim to develop self confidence, self esteem, teamwork, speaking and listening and reflection and analysis to enable young people to become active and responsible citizens of the world.

CARJ is a member of London Citizens - a federation of local churches and faith communities, schools, trade union branches and communi ty groups. As a member, CARJ can bring groups of young people to participate in a variety of events and campaigns.

CARJ intends to develop a mentoring programme to support young people who are participants in the Schools Project and the Forum. CARJ has begun to make plans for a choir, that will include a considerable involvement of young people. The Choir will be closely related to the Forum, and it will provide an additional way of keeping contact with young people.

The year 2009 will mark the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of CARJ. During 2009, the Schools Project and the Young People’s Forum will explore how their work can be integrated with these 25th Anniversary activities and with the emerging priorities for the future work of CARJ.
