// Drone Wars //

This is a conference organised by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, England, on September 18th  in London. It will explore the growing use of armed, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), otherwise known as drones. Drones are remote controlled, unmanned aircraft that fire missiles at the touch of a joystick. With operators safely located in trailers 8,000 miles away from the combat, drones offer the illusion of warfare that is clean, tidy and safe. But does this ‘play station mentality’ make killing more permissible and likely?

Armed drones are used by Britain, US and others at great human cost and often in breach of humanitarian law. Used in war and for targeted killings this technology is being used by the UK with little public debate.

As well as information about drones, there will be workshops on Britain’s arms industry and drones, the use of surveillance drones in the UK, Israel’s use of drones in Gaza and elsewhere, international law and drone war, the future of robotic weapons, local campaigning and more. Join other peace activists and researchers to investigate how to down the drones.

Date: Saturday 18th September 2010, 10am – 4pm, Venue: University of London Union, Malet Street. Cost: (which includes buffet lunch) £10.00/£6.00 conc. For more information and to register, contact Mary at Fellowship of Reconciliation www.for.org.uk, telephone 01865 250781, mary AT for.org.uk (replace AT with @).

// Turning the Tide //

A one-day workshop to explore tools for radical change.

HOSTED BY NORTHAMPTON QUAKERS

Use nonviolence to be more effective in overcoming oppression and creating a more just and peaceful society. Develop new perspectives and fresh ideas on the nature of power and how to challenge it when necessary. Local campaigners share practical ideas for more effective campaigns. What works? How and why?

Saturday 13 November 2010, 10 am to 4 pm, Friends Meeting House, Wellington Street, Northampton NN1 3AS (Opposite Marks & Spencer side entrance)

Turning the Tide is the name for a Quaker initiative bringing together active campaigners from a variety of organisations to develop new relationships while exploring nonviolent ways to effect the change we wish to see in the world.

Turning the Tide takes its inspiration and learning from effective nonviolent movements including those of Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, Greenham Women, environmental and economic justice movements, land rights nonviolent activists and many more.

 // International Peacemakers Fund - Support Practical Peacemaking Today //

Give the gift of peace to a community caught in a cycle of conflict today. By donating to the International Peacemakers Fund you enable grass-roots peacemakers to change the lives of those around them.

The peacemakers are carefully selected, and all use non-violent methods to address the root cause of the conflict, promote dialogue and build reconciliation. Often the peace builders find they are working amidst political and social upheaval, and struggle with making the most of extremely limited financial resources. For them the IPF is a crucial life-line.

This fund is unique. Every penny you donate goes directly to support peacemakers. FoR and a Trust provide the funds for administration and fundraising, it is donations like yours that create the funds we distribute.

// Calling new supporters //

FoRE is a membership organisation open to anyone who, having read the 1914 Basis of the Fellowship, is in general agreement with it and wishes to become a member. Members are asked to pay an annual subscription but there is no fixed fee; rather we ask members to pay what they feel they can afford.

Members are...
the first to hear when we've got a new campaign, the first to know about new resources or books, the first to know about events we are putting on anywhere in England, entitled to vote at the FoRE Annual Council, able to stand for election to the FoRE Board of Trustees, so that they can have an influence on our policy, entitled to receive our magazine Building Peace by Peace, and/or newsletter: PeaceLinks, entitled to contribute articles for publication (after approval) in our magazines.

Supporters
If you are in sympathy with FoRE and its work but do not wish to agree to the Basis, you can still become a supporter. Supporters are not entitled to vote at FoRE's Annual Council, nor stand for election, but are entitled to the other benefits listed above. We have a new online form for signing up either to be a member or a supporter. New members and supporters receive a welcome pack in the post; you can choose what is included in the welcome pack and what you sign up to receive when you fill out the form.

If you’d prefer to maintain a link with us informally, you can still be a donor to our funds. Giving is one of the most valuable ways to stand with us and support our work today.

// Protest in Aberporth //

Members of The Fellowship of Reconciliation, Wales will hold a meeting outside the Drones centre at Parc Aberporth on Saturday 26 June at 11.00am. The members want to raise awareness of the fact that these drones fly over the countryside from Aberporth to the Eppynt mountain to practice and test these  unmanned aircraft. Flying these unmanned aircraft is an accident waiting to happen over our countryside . They were used by the military to bomb the people of Afghanistan and Gaza.

We believe as a Fellowship that the use of these drones is immoral and more likely to kill innocent people because they are controlled remotely far from the theatre of war by soldiers who cannot feel the effect of the bombing on their video “game  console” screens.

The meeting will be led by the President of the Fellowship, The Reverend Guto Prys ap Gwynfor .

FoR England has a new website!

It has a new look and feel, new sections encouraging action for peace, and pages on using our new hire venue and centre for peace and justice work - Peace House. For the first time on our website it also lists ALL the resources we recommend, resell, or publish ourselves. We’d love to hear what you think! (The site was a donation to the charity.)

Chris Cole steps down as Director

After 7 years, Chris Cole is stepping down as Director of The Fellowship of Reconciliation, England. Chris oversaw growth and development of the charity from one staff to five, and its move from rural Clopton to central Oxford.

With growth came more administrative work and less time in direct campaigning. Chris leaves us to pursue his passions of writing and campaigning in a freelance setting, and you can reach him at chris AT fig tree.org.uk. Messages intended for FoR England should still be sent to office AT for.org.uk, or director AT for.org.uk. (Replace AT with @).

FoR Email News: April 2010

As the general election is in full-swing, FoR as part of the Network of Christian Peace Organisations (NCPO) has helped to produce an election briefing on peace and disarmament issues.
The briefing will help you to ask your prospective parliamentary candidates important questions about their position on peace and disarmament in our world. The briefing focuses on the issue of the Middle East, the arms trade, nuclear weapons and military spending and has some suggested questions for asking parliamentary candidates.
Use these materials to inform yourself and your church community on key peace and security issues for the general election. You may like to make a display of this information or include it in newsletters or bulletins during the election campaign. Candidates will want to be

seen to be communicating with faith communities and faith communities have a distinct contribution to make to the election process.

 Amidst all the noise and misinformation surrounding the signing of the new START Agreement and the up-coming NPT conference, our friend Frida Berrigan writes

To cut through the verbiage of treaties and agreements and summits, and move people from fear to action, we need to focus on three concepts. The United States is the biggest problem when it comes to nuclear weapons. We need a new treaty to replace the NPT. And no nukes means no nuclear power.”

Security for the Common Good: Responding to the Defence Review

As the Government undertakes a Strategic Defence Review and we prepare for a General Election, FoR and Pax Christi are launching an initiative to help the Christian community offer a creative and live-giving approach to security that puts people – especially the poor – at its centre. Chris Cole, Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation says “We are calling on the Government, as it undertakes the defence review, to use this opportunity for a radical evaluation of security policies. It is not enough to tinker with budgets, to choose between ‘boots or bombs’. Now is the time to redirect military spending, research and development into life-giving projects that address our real security needs.”
As part of this initiative FoR and Pax Christi have jointly produced a briefing paper entitled Security for the Common Good: a Christian challenge to military security strategies and also Addressing the real wounds of the human family: a call to action. You can download copies of each document from our website. Our aim is to use these documents to engage churches, diocese, congregations and individuals in dialogue and advocacy work in the months ahead. We have written to a number of church leaders asking them to join our call and many have already responded positively.
We would be very grateful if you would download a copy of the briefing and send it to your local MP together with a personal letter urging them to ensure that the strategic defence review is not simply a choice between bombers and boots. We would be grateful to see a copy of any reply you get from your MP.
You may have seen that the Guardian published a letter from Chris Cole and Pat Gaffney on this issue today.

Over the past few months FoR has become increasingly concerned about the use of unmanned drones (UAVs) by British and US forces. Although the use of armed drones is still relatively new there is a picture beginning to emerge of high civilian casualties. In addition the use of armed drones to target specific individuals could amount to summary or arbitrary execution, and drone operators are making life and death decisions when they are emotionally and mentally exhausted by long hours and regular schedule changes.
The Fellowship of Reconciliation has written to the Secretary of State for Defence, Bob Ainsworth, outlining our concerns and we plan to launch a campaign on the issue later in the Spring. FoR advocates nonviolent conflict transformation in order to bring about genuine and lasting peace. Drones are the latest in a long line of new weapons used in the mistaken belief that they will provide a clean and tidy solution to a conflict – time and again history has proved that this is a myth.
Further information about drones is available on our website here. You may also like to read an article by Chris Cole and campaigner Jim Wright on the use of drones in latest issue of Peace News
If you would like to get involved with the campaign and receive campaign material when it is ready please send an email to dronecampaign@for.org.ukblocked::http://www.peacenews.info/blocked::http://www.for.org.uk/drones

The first decade of the 21st century was marred by terrible conflict.  Can you help to make the next decade a decade of peace by supporting grassroots peacemakers in areas of conflict through FoR’s International Peacemakers Fund?
By giving grants worth between £2,000 and £8,000 we are able to support grassroots peacemaking around the world, including Palestine and Uganda.  A UK Trust provides all the administration costs so any donations we receive, we distribute directly to peacemakers.
We are shortly about to release our next round of grants — with any support you can give today we can support even more projects.
So whatever you can spare, be it £5, £50 or even £500, please donate today.

For those who live in the Oxford area, you might like to know that in conjunction with the Oxford Catholic Worker, FoR will be holding a weekly Lent study group at our HQ, Peace House, in central Oxford on Tuesday evenings. We shall be using Ched Myer’s excellent study of Mark’s Gospel, Binding The Strong Man, to guide us on our journey. Myer’s argues that Mark’s Jesus offers a compelling model for a Christian practise of nonviolent resistance to social, economic and political domination. Each Tuesday we will meet at Peace House to discuss a chapter of the book. We have abridged versions of the book which can be bought for £1.50 at any of the sessions. If you would like more details please contact chris@for.org.ukblocked::mailto:chris@for.org.uk
