Opening Doors, Opening Hearts

Housing Justice is the national voice of Christian action in the field of housing and homelessness. We exist because we believe that human dignity is challenged by the lack of decent housing.

We support night-shelters, drop-ins and hundreds of practical projects nationwide by providing advice and training for churches and other community groups who work with homeless people.

We work by uniting Christians and churches of all denominations across the country to work for change. We embrace partnerships with people of all faiths (and none) who share our values of social justice and compassion.

Poverty & Homelessness Action Week

Action Week 2009 saw over 100 events take place across the UK, from church services to professional performances of a special drama called Voices from the Edge.

Poverty & Homelessness Action Week 2010 will run from 30 January to 7 February.

Home, Homelessness and Community
Turvey Abbey

Friday 24th September

This workshop is part of an ongoing inquiry into the meaning of 'home and community' through in-depth consideration of the experience and the meaning of homelessness and ‘unhoused’ states of mind.

We begin by considering the difficulties of working with hard-to-reach homeless persons whose membership of society is defined by their placing of themselves in liminal spaces that are neither in nor out. This will be followed by discussion and exploration of the meaning, and our experience, of ‘community’ and its potential contribution to personal, social and spiritual health as well as a consideration of the pain caused when communities become corrupted, divided, damaged or fail.

The day will be chaired by Dr Jo-anne Carlyle, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant and will comprise a combination of talks, small discussion groups, an experiential exercise and a large group plenary.

Presentations will be:-

  • John Adlam, Principal Adult Psychotherapist, Springfield Hospital will speak on ‘Disturbances of Groupishness: the unhoused mind and the unhomely society
  • Br. John Mayhead, Benedictine Monk, Turvey Abbey will speak on ‘The stable life: living in a monastic community
  • Christopher Scanlon, Consultant Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant will speak on ‘Accommodating un-housed minds: re-membering the dismembered?

Dr Jo-anne Carlyle, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant will chair the day and convene the Large Group
