CEL is a multi-denominational UK Christian organisation
for people concerned about the Environment

Working for a Greener Church

We are responsible for our impact on God's creation as a whole. CEL helps members to understand and relate these responsibilities to their faith. Members can then encourage others in their local church to think seriously about these issues.

1. BIODIVERSITY

"Biodiversity" is a hard concept to get one's head round - Often it is easier talking about "Protecting Nature" or "Protecting the rainforests".
Mike Shanahan of IEED has written an excellent article, explaining biodiversity. Do read it, then maybe you can write an article in your own Parish Newsletter. http://www.iied.org/pubs/pdfs/17037IIED.pdf
"His briefing explains why biodiversity loss will be an increasingly important story in the coming years. It suggests ways for journalists to improve their reporting and make it mean more to their audiences."
Biodiversity is the variety of Genes, Species and Ecosystems on the Planet. Because humans and our crops are taking up so much space, the variety of genes, species and ecosystems is reducing. For the sake of future generations we need to protect some of this variety.
This year is "International Biodiversity Year"

See also Ruth Jarman's parish magazine article on biodiversity, using some of the material mentioned in this email http://www.christian-ecology.org.uk/m1003.htm

Thank you also to the CEL member who told me about the "Species of the Day" picture and information from IUCN that one can out on one's web page - I have put it lower down the CEL website index page for a little while. http://www.iucnredlist.org/

2. BIODIVERSITY ACTION SUPPORT GROUP

In spite of what I have written above, it is actually hard to find other people in churches strongly caring about Biodiversity as a Christian Responsibility. This may in part be because "biodiversity" is such a wide subject.
I am offering to set up a CEL "Biodiversity Action Self Help Group", by using the Internet, - for individuals throughout UK or world - I anticipate it will have 8 to 12 people, we will "meet" once a fortnight by "telephone conference" and have a Googlegroups or possibly Ning system of communicating between times. (I have three volunteers plus me so far).
.. I explain these ideas on http://bit.ly/b3JAss  which is http://rainforest-save.blogspot.com/2010/01/ten-top-tips-for-saving-biodiversity-in.html  and especially on http://bit.ly/9GPn6k  which is
http://rainforest-save.blogspot.com/2010/01/what-biodiversity-action-support-group.html
Please have a look at these and if you are interested in joining in, get in touch.
