St Catherine of Siena in Birmingham, a newly formed small j&p group have had a very active year. One of their very successful campaigns was a Livesimply & recycling weekend after Masses.
They produced a handout with non-threatening ideas on becoming more eco-friendly,below. They contacted Birmingham City Council Recycling Department, Montague Street, Bordesley, and told them what they planned to do; some time later they delivered a very large box of cotton shopping bags with Birmingham Recycling Info on one side, Tea-towels with similar info, small flat cardboard boxes for used batteries, fridge magnets and several leaflets, such as 'Save Water' recycling info etc. The group sent a thankyou letter to the department after the event. Since the weather was dry they set up outside the church on wall-papering tables. Their Priests, were very keen and at both Masses one of them spoke at the beginning of the Mass about the event. They also composed the bidding prayers (below), and the sermon was on the theme. After the Mass the handout was given out & people were free to approach the tables and help themselves to the free gifts. Needless to say they were delighted to be given freebies! The event was a great success; more events are planned for the coming year.
