Nuclear weapons (and weapons of mass destruction)
We are convinced that, in the words of Pope Francis "the desire for peace and fraternity planted deep in the human heart will bear fruit in concrete ways to ensure that nuclear weapons are banned once and for all, to the benefit of our common home." [His Holiness Pope Francis, December 2014]
Pax Christi International issued a Statement on Nuclear Disarmament [Brussels, 6 August 2014], in which they state categorically: “The use – even the possession – of nuclear weapons is immoral, and it simply cannot be justified.” The full statement can be viewed here, which also includes a series of recommendations. They finally call upon every person of good will to increase educational efforts at the local level to create and build the political will and pressure necessary to achieve a ban.
More recently, a UK multi-faith statement on nuclear weapons in 2015 has been made. This is based on a statement made by 26 faith leaders in the UK in a letter to The Times on 13 March 2015. The statement was co-ordinated by Religions for Peace UK, Pax Christi UK and a range of Churches and other faith groups. This is available to view here in which they say: “…We urge [all nuclear weapon] states and the international community to develop a robust plan of action that will lead us to a world free of nuclear weapons.”
