Peace
‘Peace is the fruit of anxious daily care to see that each person lives in justice as God intends’ (Paul VI, Populorum Progressio)
From the perspective of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching, peace is much more than the absence of war. It is about creating the conditions in which people can live in dignity, and working against the things which prevent this happening, which in themselves can lead to conflict. It recognises that true security comes from building relationships of mutual trust and a fair sharing of the earth’s resources.
Working for peace includes:
campaigning for disarmament,
for a reduction in military spending and
an end to the arms trade;
seeking alternative ways of resolving conflicts through dialogue and nonviolent resistance;
building relationships that break down prejudice and misunderstanding between peoples near and far;
creating a culture of peace in our homes, neighbourhoods and wider society; and
living in harmony with creation.
